The extraordinary demand for Toy Story toys began with the release of the first Toy Story movie way back in 1995. The characters were created or used by the production team at Pixar Studios and the film was released through Disney. The success of the film and the exceptional sales figures for the toys owed much to the strength of the story and the appeal of the characters within it. This combination was a winning one for Pixar, Disney, and many millions of children across the globe.
Back in 1995 Toy Story toys were the must have playthings of that year. Indeed children wanted these toys so much that there was a global shortage of them. Pixar had created characters that children could relate to, and who they wanted to play with.
The toys of the two main characters Woody the Cowboy and Buzz Lightyear the Space Ranger were particularly popular and thus even harder to come by. The story revolved round how a more traditional toy such as Woody could compete with a more modern one like Buzz Lightyear who was shiny and has plenty of gadgets. Seen as how Disney could not make these toys quickly enough the answer was that cowboy toys could be popular as any other type.
Aside from Woody and Buzz Lightyear other toys that were available with the original film included Ham the Piggy bank, Rex the T Rex model, and Mr Potato Head. Ham was a wise guy with one liners, Rex was a constantly scared dinosaur, whilst Mr Potato Head fancied himself as an action hero. Yet it was the two main characters that were available to buy in the widest range of shapes and differing sizes. Children would often want to collect toys of all the characters that were available.
Sales of these toys remained strong even two or three years after the first film had been released. The popularity of the existing characters was renewed in 1999 with the release of Toy Story 2. Woody is stolen by a toy collector and Buzz Lightyear attempts to rescue him. Further more as more toys were included in the story it meant that more toys were marketed. It meant children got to discover more characters.
The old favorites were joined by Jess the Cowgirl, the horse Bullseye, viewers get to know Mrs Potato Head and even the bad guy Stinky Pete the Prospector. Jess and Bullseye were popular whilst Mrs Potato Head could be brought to go with Mr Potato Head. Disney and Pixar were again able to maintain sales of Toy Story toys before the release of the third movie.
